  • “That was discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49960138 there have been a lot of free CAD tools being developed (many of them posted about here), but no one seems to have tried the traditional interactive interface approach w/o at least a text-based layer. My suspicions on this would be: - adding the text-based description allows using an LLM to create models - Fusion 360 and OnShape have taken up most of the oxygen in the room for '"free" traditionally interactive CAD' - the UI is _hard_ --- poster child for this see the marketing for Plasticity XYZ (which seems to be a derivation of Moment of Inspiration 3D)”

  • “I loved the stunning 3D designs created with Astra but they typically require a decent knowledge of Blender or Unreal engine which made it inaccessible. It also generated something you couldn't edit which is tricky for the design process where you typically need to try different ideas out. This is especially painful if each series of Astra loop's took 4 hours to complete. So... using Arcadium's online house editor tool - I created a skill to generate JSON that it can understand. It's still early stages - structures work pretty well but textures and complex models will need refinement (coming soon!). Would love to get feedback! thanks”

Existing solutions Observed

  • Fusion 360 · Free for personal use, $495/year for commercial use · complaints: Steep learning curve for beginners, Can be resource-intensive on older computers, Subscription model can be costly
  • Tinkercad · free tier · complaints: Limited features for advanced designs, Not suitable for complex projects, Export options can be restrictive
  • SketchUp · Free tier, Pro version at $299/year · complaints: Pro version can be expensive for casual users, Limited functionality in the free version, Performance issues with large models
  • Canva (3D features) · Free tier, Pro version at $12.99/month · complaints: Limited 3D capabilities compared to specialized tools, Pro version features can be confusing, Not suitable for detailed 3D modeling
  • Vectary · Monthly $25 · Free Free · Starter — · Team — · complaints: Limited features in the free version, Performance issues with complex models, Export options can be limited

There is a notable gap in the availability of 3D design tools that cater specifically to users without advanced technical skills while also providing robust editing capabilities for generated designs. Current offerings tend to either be too simplistic for complex projects or require significant expertise, leaving a segment of potential users underserved.
